Today you can from time to time hear someone saying that technology is moving to quick to follow. You might even feel that way yourself sometimes. And in most ways it is true. Development and science is uncovering new landmasses on the planet of knowledge each day, and every day faster then the day before. Regular books have trouble to encompass the knowledge of today before it is outdated and in need of replacement. Something especially true with medicine. Eric Kandels classic regarding neuroscience “Principles of neural science” have had its release date for the fifth edition postponed a few times over the last years now. My guess is that it is hard to finish one chapter in time before the previous one is outdated.

The solution to this ought to be articles. Straight from the universities and into the hands of anyone who is interested. A good book on basics and then only articles. The problem with this is that articles is dense and take both time and patience to read. And they often address very small parts of the science they sprout from. The only field of study you can keep track of without dedicating all free time to articles is the one that is your own field, and maybe some fields with much in common. Since articles need basic understanding of the field from which they origin and need time and patience to read you never venture far from your field of expertise.

But why should anyone need to know about the progress in any other field then their own? Well, with every step into further understanding of a field the closer to the same basic mechanic we get. Everything is ultimately governed by the laws of physics (as we know today, right?). And the closer to the “core” of all things we get we also get the opportunity to combine fields of science.

A good example is the work on BMI that is done all over the globe. The goal is to combine neuroscience, electrotechnology and computers. Point being that with extended knowledge of the possibilities in completely different fields then your own you might come up with the next e=mc².

The idea to solve this would be an idea that have circulated among scientists and others a long time. Sharing knowledge. And not in the way that articles does it, no. The way we all do it in our everyday life. We talk and explain what we do to people we meet.

This idea reminds me of a quote from the series “A Streetcar Named Desire”, where the character Blance DuBois says:

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.”

Someday I want to start, or why not just experience, a group where you can get the latest and greatest summaries of fields of study by the top scientists on that field. A door into understanding what else there is and what visions of the future it holds, and also the worries and dangers.

I want to be able to explain to anyone what nanotechnology, mathematics, biotech, physics, geology, zoology and everything else is and what is happening inside that field today. Not with great detail, but in essence. I want to know where I can turn when I get stuck in my field.

Synergy must be fueled. Science-fiction must be transformed into Science-fact.

De senaste dagarna har politikerna tittat ut genom de stängda dörrarna bakom vilka de haft EUmöten av olika informella former. Två huvuden som särskilt fångat min uppmärksamhet är Beatrice Ask och Tomas Billströms. Tyvärr är det inte deras behagliga utseende som fått mig att stanna i stegen, det är deras (främst Beatrice Asks) kommentarer på kritiken på Stockholmsprogrammet.

Beatrice Ask (m), Tomas Billström (? vem bryr sig) och Christian Engström (pp) satt runt samma bord här om dagen i TV4s Nyhetsmorgon och pratade om Stockholmsprogrammet. Det som hade kunnat bli en bra diskussion blev istället en uppvisning i politisk retorik. Christian Engström framförde den kritik som finns bland folket. Till svar brände Beatrice Ask iväg en snygg kommentar.

[...] FRA har definitivt inget med detta att göra men nästan allt polisarbete innebär någon typ av undersökning och informationshämtning [...]

Vilket i sig är ett spännande uttalande då FRA själva på sin egen hemsida meddelar att FRA delger sina rapporter till “FRA:s uppdragsgivare, till exempel regeringen, Försvarsmakten och Säkerhetspolisen” [länk]. Så när Christian Engström säger SÄPO+FRA och Beatrice Ask säger NEJ, så är man väl så nära man kan komma på en lögn från hennes sida.

I samtalets början slänger sig Beatrice också med en retorisk slägga. Hon nämner barnpornografi i samband med Stockholmsprogrammet (som om det skulle spela någon roll vad hon sa efteråt. Jag skulle kunna försvara att mala ner alla de sista tigrarna i världen ifall jag kunde länka ihop det med ett sätt att stoppa barnpornografin). Det är en retorisk knock-out eftersom ingen offentlig person kan försvara sig mot det. Att säga att personlig integritet står över att stoppa barnpornografin är socialt självmord, även om det i teorin kan vara sant.

Vidare i diskussionen så handlar det mycket om hårklyveri från Beatrice sida. Stockholmsprogrammet är ett målprogram, ja. Det är alltså inte klara lagar som ska implementeras. Å andra sidan vilket hon vägrar medge är att det är ett MÅLprogram som pekar var de vill komma. Eller som HAX skriver:

Menar regeringen verkligen – på fullt allvar – att vi skall ignorera all information om det innehåll som Stockholmsprogrammets påse är tänkt att fyllas med?

Och att inte på egen hand inse att det sticker i ögonen, med rätta, på allmänheten att trycka genom FRA, IPRED och Datalagringsdirektivet och sedan ha ett målprogram som Stockholmsprogrammet är naivt. Man frågar sig lätt om politikerna är döva för kritiken eller bara för dumma för att förstå den?

I DN uttalar sig Beatrice Ask åter igen om huruvida en genomröstning av liggande förslag skulle resultera i mer övervakning.

- Nej, jag har inte hört om någon minister som driver frågan om ökad kontroll av medborgarna. Sen är det ju olika kulturer. Storbritannien har ju till exempel mer kameraövervakning än vad vi troligtvis skulle tycka var okej. Men det är bra med ett principprogram som lägger grunderna.

Först nej, sen å andra sidan kulturer, och till sist bra med principprogram. Så det säger? Att om vi ska respektera resterande EU och lägga ett principprogram, som säger vad? Baserat på de senaste lagarna som pressats igenom så har jag inte några positiva visioner. Särskilt då folk de facto idkar självcensur när övervakning finns oavsett om den tittar på personen eller inte, allt enligt metaforen om panopticon.

Alla bloggar om midsommar. Jag orkar inte just nu. Vill endast delge två citat istället för den post jag har om fildelning och förmodade framtidsutsikter.

I disagree with them about cycle maintenance, but not because I am out of sympathy with their feelings about technology. I just think that their flight from and hatred of technology is self-defeating. The Buddha, the Godhead, resides quite as comfortably in the circuits of a digital computer or the gears of a cycle transmission as he does at the top of a mountain or in the petals of a flower. To think otherwise it so demean the Buddha – which is to demean oneself.

Detta är dock inte en flirt med religion. Buddha eller Godhead är, för mig, en metafor för en värdering. Inte en utomkroppslig orsak eller entitet. Att man kan se ett värde i mer än det som fanns innan människan. Att vi kan göra gott och vackert också. Något som kan ha missats idag.
