Facebook is kinda crap

January 6th, 2010 § 1

This will be written in english. Why? Because I need to practice. Something that soon will be very apparent.

Lets face it, Facebooks main feature is that most of your friends has it, and maybe that it has a lot of features on the same site. But honestly, most of those features is not that good. Lets look at them one by one and see what I mean.

Mail – Fair to say is that mail in Facebook is not in itself bad. It does the same thing the regular mailprotocol does. But inside Facebook. That sends an additional mail. To your real mailbox… ?… With a link to the thing on Facebook which they call a mail, or message, or whatever. Don’t get me wrong, a decent socialnetworking site should have some kind of messagingsystem. But when it does NOTHING new from regular mail, and with the default settings even sends a mail to your mailbox with the goddamn message and link to answer. Why in the name of all things holy can’t I just get it to my mailbox and not one more time in Facebook. Because my mailboxes, like many others, are a Gmail one and has lots of nice features and is not a pain to use. Like Facebook. And the biggest turd of it all is that people acctually use this feature like regular mail. Expecting me to check it. Well, I’ll check it when Facebook has exchange support.

Chat – Cool to be able to in-window chatt with people online on Facebook. Not that cool it sucks. Since I surf more pages then Facebook I don’t see when anyone says anything if I don’t check it every 5th second. And, no, the flashing titlebar is not enough. But it would have been a nice thing if they used some kind of standard protocol so I could log on to the chat with Adium or similar. Which I can. But only since Steve (?) backwardsengineered it. And it is unstable and kinda crap. The “protocol” they use. Not the API Steve(?) made.

Event planning – Please. It’s good because everyone has Facebook. Check doodle out if you want at least ONE new idea. The event planing in Facebook is tedious, clumsy and non-dynamic. And no sync to iCal or Outlook or anything. Why use something and write one billion letters if I can’t sync it?

Groups and social networking – At least one good thing right? Well, if you manage to find anyone. All the social networking is only through friends of friends and direct search. Not bad, not good. With Facebooks userbase you feel like they have the opportunity of a lifetime to do some kind of kick ass tool or algorithm to find people that match you. But no.

Its too bad. It could have been nice. Hands down, Facebook does not reinvent anything and pulls of everything it does inferior to any stand alone service out there. Facebook is kinda crap.

And this post is kinda crap. But I dont have enough readers to put energy into it. I just need to get things of my mind.

Where am I?
